Fostering Traditional Music and Arts in Northeast Michigan
Ask a dozen people what “Folk music” is and you’ll get a dozen different answers. Our view is that we want to involve and engage a large variety of people with different musical tastes and interests. Our Thunder Bay Folk Festival is not a “bluegrass” festival, but you will hear bluegrass there.
You’ll also hear string band music, singer/songwriters, jug bands, gospel groups, dance bands, contemporary roots music, and upcoming bands with exciting new music yet to be defined.
The Thunder Bay Folk Society was formed in 2013 by a small group of local musicians who share a common vision of starting a first-class folk music festival in Alpena. All are music festival enthusiasts who every summer make the rounds of the excellent Michigan festivals such as Wheatland in Central Michigan, Bliss in Northwestern Michigan, and Hiawatha in the U.P.. These successful festivals and the organizations that brought them into being are the models for the Thunder Bay Folk Society and the Thunder Bay Folk Festival.
In addition to organizing the Thunder Bay Folk Festival, the society’s plans include developing an ongoing program of cultural projects throughout the year. Small concerts, open-mic events, drum circles, educational presentations, workshops, and dances are just a few of the projects underway. The goal is to involve musicians and music lovers of all ages, provide venues for local artists, and introduce to Alpena artists prominent in the folk music scene today.
